7:00 PM: Board Meeting
Regular meeting of HNA board.
Minutes
President Barbara Cornelius called the meeting to order at 7:07pm in the Hartley Elementary School Media Center. Other members in attendance were Michael Cornelius, Mike Jensen, Ralph Johnson, Ruth Johnson, Chris Lesiak, David Schoenmaker, and Roger Wendelin. Also attending was Ingrid Kirst from Community Crops.
Ingrid gave a short presentation on Community Crops. In addition to their existing eight community gardens in Lincoln, there is the possibility of adding one at 30th and Q on the property of Charlie Ogden. Sign-up would start in late March with priority going to returning gardeners followed by low income families. An effort is made to assign a plot in the garden nearest a gardener's residence. Plot sizes vary, but are about 150 to 225 square feet. Volunteers will be needed to help with setting up the garden as well as about six volunteers for monthly work days for maintenance of paths and litter pickup. The neighborhood association would need to get the word out about the garden and help with volunteer recruiting. It was suggested that Ingrid do a presentation at the annual meeting.
The minutes for the November meeting were distributed by Chris and approved by acclamation.
Roger noted that he would have the Christmas party video available on DVD.
David gave the Treasurer's report. There is a balance of $695.37 with no activity since the last report.
Ruth gave the Welcome Committee report, noting that the welcome packets needed to be updated.
Barbara gave the Newsletter Committee report. She said that it needed to be out in February, but would probably be available on-line and then distributed door-to-door later.
The Focus Area Committee report was given by Michael. He noted that we are trying to bring the Free To Grow program to Hartley. Barbara gave an update on the ornamental lights. For the entire project, there would be an additional cost of $800 per year for ornamentals compared to the standard lights; they would likely be approved. The next committee meeting was scheduled for January 15.
Discussion followed on the Mayor's Roundtable. Carol Brown had stepped down as chairperson and there was no December meeting. The January meeting was mostly devoted to a discussion of restructuring. It was noted that 5 to 13 neighborhood people usually attend. Suggestions had been made to make each meeting about one topic, only allow discussion by designated neighborhood representatives, use a real round table format, and about how to keep one person from dominating the meeting.
For the annual meeting, it was suggested that Community Crops be asked to make a presentation. It was also suggested that Danielle Nantkes be asked to attend as well as representatives from city services. Volunteers would be needed to share the work.
There was no new business.
During open discussion, Ralph asked about the status of the Vine Street widening from 35th to 40th streets. It was noted that this appears to have been tabled, but would surely come up again. The vacating of the alley behind Wagey Drug was also mentioned.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:25pm.
