Monthly Meeting 05/25/2006
Minutes
President Barbara Cornelius called the meeting to order at 7:00pm in the Hartley School Cafeteria. Members in attendance were Michael Cornelius, Ralph Johnson, Ruth Johnson, Kara Kennedy, Chris Lesiak, Jack McVay, Jackie Murray, Serena Reeves, Rhonda Schoenmaker, Susan Schoneweis, and Roger Wendelin. Others in attendance were Justin Okimi and Shelly Johnson from Union College and Shawn Ryba from Lincoln action Program.
Justin made a presentation on Union College's Project Impact. It is one day at the beginning of the school year set aside for student to make a contribution to their community. For their 25th anniversary this fall they would like to partner with Lincoln Action Program, Clinton Neighborhood Association, and Hartley Neighborhood Association on special projects to benefit Clinton and Hartley. An estimate of 500 students plus 120 people form Lincoln Action Program will be available. Examples of activities include litter pickup, graffiti cleanup, tree planting, and yard cleanup for the elderly or disabled. They would especially like some activity that can involve neighborhood kids.
Chris Lesiak presented the March meeting minutes for review. In the interest of time, Michael suggested that any corrections or additions be sent to Chris via email. There were no objections.
The Welcome Committee reminded everyone that welcome packets are available. Please help distributing these to your new neighbors.
There was no report from the Newsletter committee.
Michael reported that the Focus Area Committee was waiting for the street scape design from Olsson Assiciates.
Barbara reported that the Neighborhood Walking Group had been walking on Monday and Wednesday at 6:00pm starting at Hartley Park. It was noted that this was informal and that departure times were flexible.
Kara suggested a community dog run at vacant lots at 31st and Q.
Sean, the Neighborhood Coordinator for Free to Grow, presented a new Free to Grow and Neighborworks project. Free to Grow, currently operating in the Clinton neighborhood, aims to improve the quality of life for children and families. It does this by improving the physical environment (graffiti, lighting, old cars, etc), the social capital (Neighborhood Watch, getting to know your neighbors), and the human capital (strengthening each household). Neighborworks, formerly known an Neighborhoods Inc., aims to revitalize neighborhoods by building new housing on vacant or run-down lots and providing housing for first time home buyers. The new project will partner Hartley and Clinton neighborhoods to help build community involvement. It will include a series of twelve to fifteen neighborhood socials distributed throughout Clinton and three or more in Hartley. A plan will be submitted to Neighborworks America for a $1500 grant. Host instruction packets including templates for fliers are being created; these will be made available to other neighborhoods. After a brief discussion, there was unanimous support for this project.
Rhonda presented the Treasurer's Report. Receipts were $75 in memberships. Expenses were $7.80 for postage and $45 for park rental for the cleanup. The new balance is $545.37.
Officer elections commenced. The Nomination Committee presented a slate of Barbara for President, Judy Foreman for Vice President, Chris for Secretary, and Rhonda for Treasurer. Michael moved to accept the slate and Ralph seconded. With a vote of 11 in favor and 0 opposed, the motion passed.
A question was raised about the Mayor's Roundtable and it was noted that this is held the second Thursday of every month from 4:30pm to 6:00pm in the Media Room of the City-County Building.
Susan, who has been in charge of deciding the Yard of the Month, asked if she could recognize more than one yard at a time. It was noted that Matt Platte obtained the existing sign. Michael suggested that we put the URL of our web site on any new signs. Rhonda moved to get two more signs and Michael seconded. Michael moved to amend the main motion by adding that the wording be changed on the original sign to match the new ones and Roger seconded. The amendment failed. As suggested by Kara, Susan moved to amend the main motion so as to procure three new Yard of Distinction signs to be used in addition to the original Yard of the Month sign and Michel seconded. Both the amendment and the main motion as amended passed.
The meeting was then adjourned. ~ Hartley Neighborhood Association Monthly Meeting 05/25/2006 Minutes
